News archive - [Event Announcement] 10th European Week of Regions and Cities - OPEN DAYS
The OPEN DAYS – European Week of Regions and Cities is an annual four-day event during which cities and regions showcase their capacity to create growth and jobs, implement European Union cohesion policy, and prove the importance of the local and regional level for good European governance.
This year, it takes place October 8-10!
Over the years, the OPEN DAYS has grown into the key event on EU Regional Policy. It welcomes some 6 000 participants in October each year (local, regional, national and European decision-makers and experts) for more than 100 workshops and debates, exhibitions and networking opportunities.
In addition to the Brussels-based workshops, some 250 local events are run from September to November all over Europe.
Some OPEN DAYS workshops are organised under the umbrella of the OPEN DAYS University. New research on regional and urban development will be debated here. In this context, a selected number of renowned academics and researchers in the field of EU cohesion policy and related policy fields from different European countries are invited to hold joint lectures and participate in chaired panels focused on the thematic priorities of the OPEN DAYS 2012.
Workshops include topics such as
- Smart Academic Cities: the way to sustainable and inclusive regional growth
- Cross-border cooperation boosts innovation
- How can the regional level learn from each other on innovation? How can the regional context contribute to smart specialisation?
- Smart partnerships for resource efficiency in energy and transport and smart partnerships for innovation and entrepreneurship
- Poster session for young researchers
- European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing: The Opportunity for regions
- Innovation Union for the European outermost regions
- Smart specialisation strategies from a research and innovation perspective in maritime regions
- Smart Specialisation: The processes and institutions that drive the concept
- Eastern Partnership
- Energy as specialisation for smart and green growth
- Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion: Transnational, crossborder and interregional cooperation actions paving the way ahead
- Delivering regional growth through innovation: past, present and future
- Achieving smart specialisation via territorial cooperation
- Towards Europe 2020 aims: Interregional solutions for smart specialisation. Followed by networking event
- Innovation and climate change
- Smart specialisation and entrepreneural discovery - the role of business community
- IPA cross-border cooperation - added value to EU integration of accession countries

The programme is finalised on the basis of:
- Co-operation with international organisations and academic organisations;
- Suggestions put forward by the regional partnerships and other partners.
Organisers or participants are asked to create, coordinate or contribute to online networking groups prior to the event on the 'RegioNetwork2020' platform.

The OPEN DAYS regional partnership 'Adriatic-Ionian Macroregion' (AIM) is organising an Open Doors-Exhibition to introduce 13 partner territories from five different countries. Brochures, documents, products and gadgets will be at display on their stands, alongside information about the AIM 2012 OD projects and activities. An closing ceremony is scheduled on 10 October, 18:30, in the presence of Presidents and Representatives from all the partner territories. Further networking events are foreseen during the opening time. Featuring Territories: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Marche, Molise, Puglia and Sicilia (IT); Dubrovnik-Neretva and Istria (HR); Republika Srpska and Herzegovina-Neretva (BH); Nisava-Toplica-Pirot and Sumadija-Pomoravlje (RS); Republic of Slovenia (SI)
