News archive - S3 Strategy of Montenegro expected by the end of this year

Mid of June the Minister of Science Sanja Damjanović met with Vladimir Šucha, Director-General of the Joint Research Centre – JRC.to discuss on the Smart Specialization Strategy, which is being developed by Montenegro with the support of a JRC team. During the meeting, Director Šucha stressed that Montenegro had progressed the most in the process and that he believed that the end of the year was a realistic date for the finalization of the document. He also promised an additional expert team to visit Montenegro in mid-September, which would help additionally speed up the activities.

Minister Damjanović took the opportunity to inform Director Šucha about the activities implemented so far to establish the South-East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST), as well as about the future steps for the implementation of this regional project.
The Minister pointed out that the region had made a unanimous decision on the option for the Institute, as well as that the future project would be intended for Hadron cancer therapy, the state-of-the-art method for treating a large number of cancer types. According to her, the region needs a research infrastructure of the highest level in order to be able to become competitive to the rest of Europe in future.

During the meeting, Minister Damjanović also spoke about the planned establishment of the so-called clinical network that would allow future patients to be treated by an international team of experts, i.e. oncologists. In this regard, she asked the JRC for support, given that JRC had its institutes across Europe and the world. Finally, the interlocutors also discussed the access of Montenegrin scientists to these centres, which would, as Director Šucha promised, be possible in the near future, with no additional financial participation required.

Earlier, Minister Damjanović participated in a meeting of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), which was dedicated to developing a single regional position on the future new research and innovation framework programme, called Horizon Europe, primarily with a view to enable the countries of the region to make an influence on changes to the future framework programme in favour of the Western Balkans. The proposal for this programme was officially presented by Carlos Moedas, the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, on 7 June in Brussels. The future framework programme has surpassed all previous figures and envisaged a total of EUR 100 billion for science in Europe for the period of 2021-2027, which is 20 billion more than in Horizon 2020.
