News archive - Event: Towards future challenges of agricultural research in Europe

A conference entitled 'Towards future challenges of agricultural research in Europe' took place from 26 to 27 June in Brussels, Belgium hosted by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research.

The conference aimed to stimulate a debate on research needs and the need for a coherent European research agenda by asking the following questions:

Will biofuels replace oil as the main energy source and become the main crop for European agriculture? How will this affect food prices?
How will the farm of the future look?
Will Europeans eat more fish and fish products?
How will climate change affect agricultural production in different parts of the EU?

The discussion built on the results of a wide foresight process, initiated by the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR), and aimed at identifying possible scenarios for European agriculture with a 20-year perspective and appropriate research responses.
